What is Massage Therapy?

Massage Therapy consists of hands-on manipulation of the body’s soft tissues including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints.  An alternative health option, massage helps to alleviate the soft tissue discomfort associated with everyday and occupational stresses, muscular overuse and many chronic pain syndromes.  If employed early enough after accidents involving trauma and injury, massage greatly reduces the development of painful muscular patterning.

Massage therapists work to improve the circulation of blood through the body and to speed the removal of metabolic waste products from muscles. Their skilled kneading increases the flexibility of muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues. Some people visit a massage therapist to relieve pain or to warm up before a sporting event. Others want to relax and reduce stress.

Food For Thought

Although not being legally allowed to “treat” illness may seem like a limitation for massage therapists, massage therapy can in fact be a part of the profound healing qualities of touch. Massage provides emotional support, care, touch and attention that is not easily available in our current medical system. With alternative therapies, not having all our focus on the illness, we are free to enhance the wellness of a person. Massage can therefore, help shift the person’s health and wellness paradigm, aiding them in bringing forth their own healing capabilities.
